General Etiquette

  • Training apparel shall consist of a toe balk (karate uniform) or karate uniform pants, belt and an official club t-shirt during summer hours.
  • When adjusting your uniform or belt:
    • Turn and face 180 away from your instructor.
    • If no instructor is present at the time, turn 180 from the front of the toe chang.
    • If you are working with a partner/opponent, always face away from them.
  • All jewelry (rings, watches, earrings, etc.) must be removed prior to start of class.
  • When addressing a black belt (1st, 2nd, or 3rd Dan) or anyone else who is assisting the instructor, refer to them as Mr. Mrs. or Ms. plus their last name.
  • When addressing or referring to a Master Instructor (4th Dan or higher), refer to them as “Master” plus their first OR last name.
  • Never lean against the walls, post, beams, or mirrors while in the toe chang.
  • While sitting, keep your back straight, legs crossed and hands on your knees.
  • Never disrespect your belt by snapping it, playing jump rope with it, or dragging it on the floor.
  • Students shall not place their hands in their pockets during class when they are training in street clothes. It is considered rude and will not enhance any physical aspect of class.
